Warm weather is here and
that means more people are
out in crowds vacationing
and enjoying their
surroundings. When
automobiles collide with
pedestrians there is always
potential for serious injury
and even death. At least one
in five motor vehicle deaths
involve a pedestrian. It is
important to pay extra
attention to pedestrians
when you drive, especially
in congested areas where
pedestrians are greater in
number.
The best way to prepare
yourself for an
unpredictable event is to
drive defensively; this
means to always maintain a
safe distance around your
vehicle as well as driving
at the right speed and to
know when to slow down and
or stop. On average,
your total stopping distance
is around 104 feet when
traveling at 30 mph.
Always look ahead for places
pedestrians may be in the
road but not visible, such
as around a curve, at the
top of a hill, or between
parked cars.
Children are often the most
unpredictable and hardest to
see so it is especially
important to be more
cautious around school
zones, parks, bus stops,
shopping centers and
playgrounds whereas they may
be hidden from sight. Also,
when children run into a
roadway, their parent's
first thought may be to
rescue the child and they
may run into the road in
complete disregard of
oncoming traffic.
Joggers and bicyclists are
also sharing the roads with
automobiles at an
increasingly growing rate
and share the same

responsibilities
of obeying traffic signals
and crosswalk rules. It is
important for automobiles
and pedestrians to respect
one another's presence on
the road and to follow the
rules of the road in order
to avoid accidents.
