Drivers should take the
following precautions:
·
Stay alert and pay attention to
the sides of the road,
especially during the hours just
before dusk and dawn.
·
Drive with caution in areas
known to have a large deer
population and in areas with
roads around agricultural fields
and forestland.
·
Look for other deer after one
has crossed the road, deer
seldom travel alone.
·
Always wear your seatbelt. The
Insurance Information Institute
for Highway Safety reports that
in a study of fatal animal
related collisions, 60% of
people killed were not wearing a
seatbelt.
·
When driving at night, use high
beam headlights when there is no
oncoming traffic; the high beams
will better illuminate the eyes
of any deer on or near the
roadway.
·
In the event your vehicle
strikes a deer, try to avoid
going near or touching the
animal. A frightened and wounded
deer can hurt you or further
injure itself.
If you are involved in an
accident with a deer there is
coverage for your damage if you
carry comprehensive coverage on
your policy, a deductible will
apply. Comprehensive coverage
protects you when your vehicle
needs to be repaired or replaced
as a result of theft or damage
resulting from perils such as
fire, vandalism, flood, falling
tree limbs, and striking an
animal; an accident with another
vehicle is covered under
collision. Comprehensive also
extends coverage for cracked or
broken glass without a
deductible being applied as long
as there is no damage to the
frame around the damaged glass.
You can choose your own
deductible for this coverage:
the higher the deductible, the
lower the premium. In
determining the right deductible
for you, decide how much you can
afford to pay out of pocket for
your vehicle's repair or
replacement.
If you have any questions or
concerns regarding comprehensive
or any other coverage, one of
our customer service
representatives will be happy to
take the time to review your
policy with you.
