10 Tips to Keep Your Home Safe While on Vacation

Vacations are a time to relax and get away from everyday stress. Keep your mind at ease while you're on vacation by keeping your home safe and secure.
spacer
1 Arrange for a trusted neighbor or friend to pick up your mail daily. Or, you can temporarily discontinue your postal service and or newspaper delivery.
spacer
2 Do not leave a key under the proverbial doormat, or anywhere else in the yard! Professional burglars know all the hiding places. Leave a spare key with your friend or neighbor.
spacer
3 Turn the ringer to your phone off while away and most definitely don’t vocalize your departure on your answering machine message.
spacer
4 Turn off water valves to your washing machine, icemaker, and dishwasher.
spacer
5 Make sure a neighbor or a house-sitter knows where the water main shut-off is located in the event of a broken pipe.
spacer
6 Don't waste unnecessary electricity when you aren't even there. Unplug things like microwaves with clocks, computers, and other items that are not needed while you are away.
spacer
7 Unplug your TV, computer and appliances susceptible to lightning and power surges. Each time a surge occurs and causes damage to your electronics, they will deteriorate until they eventually fail.

8 Locks on windows and doors are an excellent way to keep intruders out, but they only work if you use them, if they are rusted or broken, replace them. This may take a little extra time and money-think of it as an investment. Make sure you lock the garage door and disconnect the door opener and as an added precaution stick a piece of wood into the tracks

9 Many people keep their valuables in a fireproof/ waterproof safe or chest in their home, but remember that if you can move it someone else can too. Take personal documents and jewelry to a safe deposit box or leave them with a friend or family member. Also, consider keeping a video diary or have pictures of all of your valuables. This may prove useful in getting them back if something were to happen.

10 Call your home security company and inform them about your plans. This way the company will know where you are and how to reach you if something does occur. Notify local law enforcementgood ideaas well so they can keep an extra eye on your home.

FROZEN PIPES

Every year thousands of homes become casualties to frozen pipes. As water freezes it expands and no matter the quality of your pipes, expanding water can still cause a pipe to crack or break. Outdoor pipes as well as those that run along exterior walls, attics, and crawl spaces are susceptible due to their exposure to colder temperatures. Also, a hot water supply line can freeze just the same as a cold water line, so it is important to make sure that both supply lines are equally protected.

How to protect your pipes this winter:

1 Insulation; the better the insulation the better your pipes are being protected: Heating and cooling can account for up to 70% of energy used in the average American home so insulation not only protects your pipes but will also help reduce your energy bills. Typical types of insulation are fiberglass, cellulose, rigid foam board, spray foam, and radiant barriers.

2 Seal cold air leaks, especially where your pipes are located. Caulk, spray foam or weather stripping are common sealants for seams, cracks, and openings to the outside.

3 Disconnect garden hoses and shut off and/or drain your water system
spacer
4 Keep your thermostat at a minimum of 55°F

5 Home Temperature Alarms: These systems allows you to call into your alarm and check the current temperature, power status and even remotely program the unit from any phone in the world.

ORGAN TRANSPLANT

Organ and tissue transplants offer patients a new chance at a healthy, productive and normal lives. Anyone can be a potential donor regardless of age, race, or medical history and one donor can save up to eight lives. Organ donation gives life and costs nothing.

According to the New England Organ Donor Bank, every day 17 people in the United States die waiting for organ transplants. Every day about 74 people receive an organ transplant and currently there are an estimated 100,000 people who are waiting for transplant surgeries.

The Massachusetts Donor Registry provides a way for Massachusetts Drivers License and ID holders to consent to organ and tissue donation when they apply for or renew their driver’s license. The information is then made available to designated organ and tissue recovery organizations so that donation can occur after death and in fulfillment of the individual’s desire to donate and to help others. If you don’t have the donor symbol heart on your license already, you can sign up right now to be a donor at the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles website Bullet
